[Reggie
Sutton

[Sensei
Reggie Sutton is a 32 year veteran of Judo as well as a member of
the United States Judo Association. He first started Judo at
12 years of age and grew into a highly recognized and successful
judo competitor throughout the state of Connecticut. After
many years of training he earned his Black Belt in 1999 and in the
summer of 2000 he began teaching Judo to inner city kids as part of
the Police Athletic League's summer program. Later that year
he partnered with his lifetime Judo instructor Larry Rodgers Senior
and they formed the Elm City Judo Club. Together they
instructed and trained judo champions on all levels; state,
regional, national and international. At one time Elm City
Judo Club was the home of 9 state and regional champions
simultaneously.
[Sensei
Reggie also has a background in Tae Kwon Do, training many years with Sensei
Larry Rodgers Jr at Top Ten Karate Studios and earning his blue belt. He
also competed successfully in various Karate competitions and he held the United
Martial Arts Karate Associations (UMAKA) State Championship for fighting
and self defense in the same year. He also won the Best of the Best Karate
championship for self defense and fighting during his competitive years.
[During
his competitive Judo career he competed and won a title as Northeast open judo
champion, Leferenirer Memorial invitational Judo champion, was 2 time silver
medalist in the Nutmeg State Games, 3 time silver medalist in the Connecticut
State Judo Championship, and earned a 2nd place finish in the New England Open
Judo Championships. In his only international judo competition named the
Liberty Bell International Judo Championship, he finished 3rd overall his weight
division of over 40 competitors from as far away as Japan, South America and
Jamaica.
[In
addition to teaching the art of Judo, Sensei Reggie is also an Arrest and
Control and Police Ground Combat Instructor certified by teh Municipal Police
Training Counsel (MPTC), and on occasions teaches the art of arrest and control
and ground combat to new police recruits at the New Haven Police Training
Academy.
